What is a Driving licence

A UK Driving Licence is an official document that authorizes individuals to operate motor vehicles on public roads in the United Kingdom. It is issued by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) in England, Scotland, and Wales, and by the Driver & Vehicle Agency (DVA) in Northern Ireland.

  • Legal Requirement – Anyone driving a vehicle on UK roads must hold a valid driving licence.

  • Photocard Format – Modern UK licences are issued as photocard licences, replacing older paper versions.

  • Categories & Entitlements – The licence specifies which types of vehicles the holder is permitted to drive.

  • Validity & Renewal – Full photocard licences are valid for 10 years, while provisional licences have different rules.

  • Identification Use – A UK driving licence can serve as proof of identity in non-driving contexts, such as opening a bank account.

The UK driving licence is divided into different categories based on the type of vehicle you are permitted to drive. Here are some of the main categories:

Mopeds & Motorcycles

  • Category AM – Mopeds with a max speed of 15.5-28 mph.
  • Category A1 – Light motorcycles up to 125cc.
  • Category A2 – Motorcycles with a power output up to 35kW.
  • Category A – Motorcycles with unlimited power output.

Cars & Light Vehicles

  • Category B1 – Light vehicles and quad bikes.
  • Category B – Standard cars (up to 3,500kg) with up to 8 passenger seats.
  • Category B+E – Cars with trailers up to 3,500kg.

Lorries & Buses

  • Category C1 – Small lorries up to 7,500kg.

  • Category C – Large lorries over 7,500kg.

  • Category D1 – Minibuses up to 16 passenger seats.

  • Category D – Full-size buses with more than 16 passenger seats.

Special Vehicles

  • Category F – Agricultural tractors.

  • Category G – Road rollers.

  • Category H – Tracked vehicles.

  • Category K – Pedestrian-controlled vehicles.

  9. Send your identification details and passport-size photographs (If not submitted on the application form directly)
  10. Your licence will be ready within few days.

If you hold a full licence issued in a country within the European Union, you can drive in the UK using your original licence until it expires. The same applies to those with a European Economic Community (EEC) licence. Also, you can drive in the UK for up to 12 months on a licence issued in a ‘designated country’ (Andorra, Australia, Barbados, British Virgin Islands, Canada, Cayman Islands, Falkland Islands, Faroe Islands, Hong Kong, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, Republic of Korea, Republic of North Macedonia, Singapore, South Africa, Switzerland, Taiwan, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates and Zimbabwe).

The short answer is YES. But this will not be necessary since visitors and tourists can drive around Great Britain (i.e. England, Wales, and Scotland) on their valid foreign driving licence for up to 12 months from the day they last entered the country.
